How many people
have HIV & AIDS?
West
Virginia: As of June
2001, the West Virginia
Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) records show
that 495 West Virginians were living with HIV and AIDS (available
for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format by clicking here). Through June 2001, a total of 1113
cases of AIDS had been reported to the DHHR. The map below reflects
the findings of the Epidemiological Profile by WVDHHR for end
of year 2000 (available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format

United
States: In mid-2001, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that
between 800,000 and 900,000 people in the U.S. were living with
HIV/AIDS. Of them, over 300,000 were living with AIDS. Through
June 2000, a total of 753,907 cases of AIDS had been reported
to the CDC.
Worldwide: Based on estimates from the United
Nations AIDS program (UNAIDS), approximately 47 million people
have been infected with HIV since the start of the global epidemic.
Through December 2000, an estimated 21.8 million children and
adults have died, and an estimated 36.1 million people are living
with HIV infection or AIDS.
UNAIDS estimates 5.3
million new HIV infections occurred in 2000. This represents
almost 16,000 new cases per day. An estimated 3.0 million adults
and children died of HIV/AIDS in 2000.
