How many people have HIV & AIDS?

West Virginia: As of June 2001, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) records show that 495 West Virginians were living with HIV and AIDS (available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format by clicking here). Through June 2001, a total of 1113 cases of AIDS had been reported to the DHHR. The map below reflects the findings of the Epidemiological Profile by WVDHHR for end of year 2000 (available for download in Adobe Acrobat PDF format by clicking here). The 2001 Epi Profile is available for download by clicking here.

United States: In mid-2001, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that between 800,000 and 900,000 people in the U.S. were living with HIV/AIDS. Of them, over 300,000 were living with AIDS. Through June 2000, a total of 753,907 cases of AIDS had been reported to the CDC.

Worldwide: Based on estimates from the United Nations AIDS program (UNAIDS), approximately 47 million people have been infected with HIV since the start of the global epidemic. Through December 2000, an estimated 21.8 million children and adults have died, and an estimated 36.1 million people are living with HIV infection or AIDS.

UNAIDS estimates 5.3 million new HIV infections occurred in 2000. This represents almost 16,000 new cases per day. An estimated 3.0 million adults and children died of HIV/AIDS in 2000.

See the most recent issue of the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report, the CDC HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report and the UNAIDS AIDS Epidemic Update: December 2000.
